HEADINGLEY (third day of four)
Yorkshire 398. Hampshire 159 (MJ Hoggard 6 for 57) and 136 for four (MJ Brown 58*; TT Bresnan 2-20)
Lunch
Hampshire have been bowled out just before lunch, 239 runs behind on the first innings and Yorkshire have enforced the follow-on. In favourable conditions for seam bowling, Matthew Hoggard took his sixth wicket with the first ball of the morning, having Nic Pothas caught low at first slip.
That made it six out of six for Hoggard, but Deon Kruis spoilt his chances of taking all ten when he had Greg Lamb caught at slip.Hampshire’s last three wickets then fell for 14 runs. Grey clouds remain above Headingley, a welcome sight for Yorkshire’s seam attack as they look to push for victory.
Tea
Hampshire are looking increasingly forlorn in this match. There have been several brief breaks for rain today, but Yorkshire have still managed to advance towards a victory, taking three wickets in the first 26 overs of Hampshire’s follow-on.
Matther Hoggard has yet to add to his six first-innings wickets, but Tim Bresnan bowled a fine spell down the hill, having Michael Carberry caught at third slip and trapping Jimmy Adams leg-before.
He also had John Crawley dropped on seven, but Joe Sayers’ missed chance was not expensive, as Anthony McGrath quickly found his edge again. Bresnan, the man of the moment, was on hand to take the catch at second slip.
At tea, Hampshire were still 159 runs away from making Yorkshire bat again.
Close
The rain has frustrated Yorkshire’s push for an innings win but they remain confident of completing a victory tomorrow, with Hampshire still needing 103 runs to make the home side bat again. Between the showers, Yorkshire picked up another important wicket after tea when Michael Lumb sliced a drive to point off Anthony McGrath. This was a second wicket in ten balls for McGrath, who was standing in for Darren Gough as captain. Michael Brown has played well for his unbeaten 58 for Hampshire but, in helpful conditions for seam bowling, he looks to be fighting a losing battle.
