Yorkshire took the early lead in the first division of the LV County Championship with victory by an innings and 27 runs over Hampshire at Headingley Carnegie on Saturday. Matthew Hoggard took the last two wickets to fall, giving him eight in the match to press his claim for an England recall, but, in doing so, he denied the out-of-form Michael Vaughan the chance of a second innings.
The other three matches in the first division were drawn. Justin Langer made 76 for Somerset against Lancashire, but most eyes were on Andrew Flintoff, who went wicketless in eight overs.
Kent took Sussex's last three wickets for eight runs at Hove, but made no attempt to chase 337 off a minimum 78 overs, while Stephen Harmison's two wickets for Durham against Surrey at the Riverside were overshadowed by Saqlain Mushtaq's six for 50.
In the second division, Darren Maddy, with 130, and Ian Bell (62) helped Warwickshire to a thrilling victory against Northamptonshire. Set 383 in a minimum of 82 overs, they got home with two wickets in hand despite Monty Panesar taking four for 105.
Tom Westley made 93 not out off 70 balls for Essex, feasting on Derbyshire's declaration bowling. Left 265 in 66 overs to win, Derbyshire made light work of it, winning by four wickets with six overs to spare.
Worcestershire against Leicestershire and Middlesex against Glamorgan ended in tame draws after the weather had played a crucial part.
