Headingley Carnegie
(day one of four; Yorkshire won toss)
Yorkshire 51 for one (30.2 overs), M P Vaughan 25 not out, M A Ealham 1 for 6.
Lunch
After no play in the morning session due to wet ground, an early lunch was taken. The umpires have just inspected, though, and the game is due to start at 1.30pm.
Yorkshire have won the toss, opting to bat on a straw-coloured pitch and we can look forward to Michael Vaughan, the England captain, trying to find some form against Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad.
Tea
Two hours’ play has been possible but rain has forced the players off for an early tea. Michael Vaughan, who could do with a few runs after scoring only 37 in four innings this season, has survived without too many scares in helpful conditions for seam bowling, stroking five boundaries. His sternest test came from Stuart Broad, who made the England captain play and miss several times.
He lost Joe Sayers, his opening partner, for an agonisingly laboured nine off 72 balls when Mark Ealham swung a ball back through the left-hander’s forward defensive stroke. Sayers, an old-fashioned opening batsman who only plays at the new ball when absolutely necessary, had played back six consecutive maidens from Ryan Sidebottom, whose mounting frustration was clear for all to see.
