(day two of four; Yorkshire won toss)
Yorkshire 299 (JA Rudolph 104 not out, GL Brophy 63; SCJ Broad 3 for 95, GP Swann 4 for 25). Nottinghamshire 0 for 1.
Lunch
Michael Vaughan continues to look good while he is at the crease, but the big score that he needs is still proving elusive. After a vigilant hour’s batting this morning, he was caught on the square-leg boundary off Stuart Broad and the manner of his dismissal was particularly galling for the England captain.
In Broad’s previous over, Vaughan had pulled him nonchalantly into the East Stand for six. He tried to repeat the stroke a few balls later, by which time Broad had posted a man out on the boundary and Vaughan picked him out unerringly.
This was the first of three quick wickets for Broad, who changed ends to have Andrew Gale leg-before and Adil Rashid caught at second slip. Broad has shaken Yorkshire’s top order and, with Jacques Rudolph and Gerard Brophy at the crease, the home side are in need of recovery.
Tea
That recovery duly arrived, as Yorkshire lost only one wicket in the afternoon session.
The South African pair of Rudolph and Brophy (neither of whom is classed as an overseas player) have steadily brought Yorkshire back into the game with a sixth-wicket stand of 106. Rudolph played and missed repeatedly at Ryan Sidebottom with the second new ball, while Brophy was dropped on six by Graeme Swann off Broad.
Swann eventually atoned, bowling Brophy for 63 just before tea, but his error has caused Nottinghamshire to lose their momentum.
Close
Matthew Hoggard took a wicket just before the close to continue an impressive recovery from Yorkshire. With his tenth ball, Hoggard had Will Jefferson leg-before on the front foot as Nottinghamshire began their reply to Yorkshire’s 299.
As Yorkshire’s last man, Hoggard had previously helped Jacques Rudolph to reach his century. Having taken 165 balls over his first fifty, Rudolph was rather more fluent later in his innings, reaching three figures from 246 balls with seven fours.
After helping Rudolph to add 24 for the last wicket, Hoggard was leg-before to Graeme Swann. Turning the ball considerably, Swann took three tail-end wickets to finish with four for 25.
