Alex Gidman scored his first century in 96 one-day matches for Gloucestershire to set up a total of 350 for five but it was still not enough as Hampshire thrillingly overhauled a revised target of 240 in 30 overs with three balls to spare.

Hampshire would probably have settled for their first point in three matches when rain set in during the interval but they were inspired, even without Shane Bond, who will be out for at least a fortnight with a pulled calf muscle, when play resumed under the floodlights.

Kevin Pietersen made only 23 on his second appearance of the season but Michael Carberry, who made 60 off 59 balls, and Michael Lumb set the pace with an opening stand of 52 in five overs. Chris Benham and Nic Pothas made victory almost a formality by putting on a stand of 98 in nine overs.
