(Day one of four, Nottinghamshire won the toss)
Nottinghamshire 202, Kent 33 for 4 (11 overs), JC Tredwell 9 not out, J Kemp 7 not out, Sidebottom 3-8
Morning
Nottinghamshire failed to capitalise after winning the toss as the top three all fell to catches behind the wicket. Martin Saggers led the Kent attack, shaping the ball away from a line on and just outside off stump and the home side would have been in a worse state but for poor misses by Geraint Jones and Martin van Jaarsveld.
Mark Wagh (42) was reprieved fortunately on both occasions off Saggers, who found Justin Kemp a more reliable accomplice when openers Will Jefferson and Matthew Wood edged to first slip. Kent were punished when bowlers over-pitched in search of the most challenging length but Robbie Joseph struck close to lunch as Jones held Wagh, forcing, low to his right.
Afternoon
Kent continued to turn the screw during a blissfully sunny afternoon as Nottinghamshire paid a heavy price for their moments of impatience after Adam Voges and Samit Patel added 55 for the fourth wicket. With little to hit, Stuart Broad needed 29 balls to get off the mark and there were only nine boundaries during the session.
To his own disgust, Voges (40) failed to keep down a backfoot drive against Darren Stevens whose disciplined medium pace quickly earned a second wicket when Patel (39) slashed outside off stump, tickling a thin edge to Geraint Jones. Robbie Joseph then produced an outswinger which Bilal Shafayat (3) saw parried by third slip into the hands of second.
Evening
Ryan Sidebottom and Charlie Shreck reduced Kent to 5 for 4 in the fifth over as the first day ended with a rousing Nottinghamshire fightback. Kent had continued to keep a tight grip on the Nottinghamshire innings after tea but their efforts were trumped as Sidebottom bowled Joe Denly with the first ball of the reply and continued to wreak havoc.
Shreck, too, struck in his first over and Matt Walker could do nothing about an outswinger by Sidebottom that resulted in a thin edge to Chris Read. Darren Stevens, whose wobbly medium paced troubled Nottinghamshire earlier, then paid a high price when he opted to leave one that swung in and Kent finished 169 runs behind.
