(Day two of four, Lancashire won toss)
Durham, with seven second-innings wickets in hand, need 295 runs to beat Lancashire
Lunch
After the avalanche of 20 wickets on the first day, there was a rather calmer session this morning, in which Lancashire lost just one wicket.
Mark Chilton, the former captain playing his first game of the season, had made his way comfortably to 37 before he was caught by Phil Mustard off Paul Wiseman, the off-spinner.
Chilton propped forward, the ball bouncing up off his pad to brush his glove and Mustard dived forward to take the catch.
Chilton had added 77 with Paul Horton, who completed his half-century just before lunch from 96 balls.
On a pitch of bounce but no great pace, Stephen Harmison bowled an erratic six-over spell. Mark Davies, who took 7 for 33 yesterday, has looked the most dangerous bowler, but otherwise Lancashire’s batsmen enjoyed a comfortably morning.
Tea
For the first time in three championship innings, Andrew Flintoff has avoided a first-ball duck.
Having come in the over before tea, he survived two balls from Garry Park, Durham's occasional medium-pace bowler. All eyes will be on the England all-rounder after tea to see whether he can find some form with the bat before the England selectors pick their team for the first Test this weekend.
Flintoff has joined Paul Horton, who recently completed a composed century from 74 balls. After making his breakthrough last season, when he made three hundreds, Horton has become a thoroughly reliable source of runs for Lancashire.
Mohammad Yousuf had earlier made a sparky 40, joining Horton in a third-wicket stand of 64 in 16 overs before he was caught behind down the leg-side off Wiseman. Stuart Law was then bowled by Garry Park, bringing Flintoff to the crease.
Close
Andrew Flintoff responded to his second duck in successive days with a brilliant burst of three wickets in the evening sunshine. Having been dismissed for 293 in their second innings, Lancashire set Durham 323 to win and their pursuit was immediately upset by Flintoff, who claimed the wickets of Mark Stoneman, Kyle Coetzer and Paul Collingwood to reduce Durham to 28 for three.
Durham had earlier given themselves hope of pushing for a win when they took the last seven Lancashire wickets for 69 in 19 overs. Flintoff was bowled fifth ball for his second duck of the match, as Garry Park uprooted his off stump. His revenge was taken with the ball and more of the same awaits Durham tomorrow.
