Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air
Part of the reason that Jonathan Trott is one of those rare batsmen who averages more in one-day than in first-class cricket is his temperamental propensity to fall short when the big score beckons. Yesterday, however, he reached his first total beyond 84 since May 26, 2006 and converted it into a century.
Cape Town-born and raised, Trott was a peculiar selection for England Lions last summer when badly out of form, shortly after he became eligible. Now in better touch, he timed the ball beautifully off his pads to carry Warwickshire into the lead. He was leg-before to Tom Lungley for 104 from 200 balls to one that kept ominously low.
Trott had seen three men go in 40 minutes after tea and two more fell to successive balls in Lungley's next over as the late order, revisiting last year's critical lack of resolve, undid much of his fine work. At 238 for three, Michael Powell's staunch 30 overs at the crease ended with a superb ball that dislodged him for 24, but Ant Botha and Ian Salisbury followed to hapless sweeps and with Trott gone, Neil Carter hooked to one of two men placed in the deep for the shot.
Tim Ambrose batted without apparent discomfort at No8 after ricking his neck in warm-ups, but significantly ran out of partners when Lungley, declining the new ball, made it four wickets in 21 balls by removing the last man.
Jamie Pipe, with a damaged finger, was another indisposed wicketkeeper, which enabled Freddie Klokker, assuming the gloves, to claim four catches, including a tumbling effort that saw Ian Bell perish for 48 after Darren Maddy made 57 in the morning.
Resuming with Ian Westwood, the captain saw his opening partner fall to a wretched flash at a wide, high ball in the day's second over but added 82 with Bell. At that stage, in reaching 28, Bell had brought up 5,000 runs for Warwickshire more rapidly than any home-grown player in the club's history, taking 128 innings. Andy Moles, the previous record holder, had required 149 innings.
