CARDIFF (first day of four: Derbyshire won toss):
Derbyshire 289 (JL Clare 70 not out, (CJL Rogers 69, CK Langeveldt 40, RDB Croft 4 for 93). Glamorgan 87 for one (GP Rees 48 not out).
Lunch
James Harris, who last year became the youngest bowler to take 10 wickets in a championship match at the age of 17, was quick to strike on his first appearance at Glamorgan’s redeveloped £10million Swalec Stadium.
Chris Rogers and Steve Stubbings put on 47 for the first wicket but then Derbyshire, without captain Rikki Clarke (bruised thumb) and wicketkeeper Jamie Pipe (broken finger) lost three wickets for the addition of 19 runs.
Stubbings got a bottom edge into his stumps trying to run David Harrison to third man before Harris, who will be 18 on Friday, had both John Sadler and Dominic Telo caught in the slips.
Tea
Rogers had gone past fifty for the fourth time in four championship matches but when he had made 69 off 111 balls with nine fours he wafted airily at Harrison and was caught behind.
Freddie Klokker, fresh from a maiden century against Warwickshire, soon went the same way pushing forward to Harrison and Daniel Birch, who had battled hard to reach 31, swung wildly at Robert Croft and only succeeded in lobbing a gentle catch to gully.
Jonathan Clare played well, however, and Graham Wagg gave him robust support in a seventh wicket stand of 50 before falling to a brilliant diving catch by Jamie Dalrymple.
Close
Croft became only the sixth bowler to take 900 wickets for Glamorgan when he had Jake Needham lbw but he and Alex Wharf took a hammering in a remarkable ninth wicket stand of 71 in only seven overs between Clare and Charl Langeveldt.
Langeveldt twice hoisted Croft into the grandstand and hit four fours as well before Croft had him caught at short midwicket for 40 off 19 balls while Clare was left unbeaten on 70, his third half-century in successive championship innings.
Glamorgan, left with 19 overs’ batting, reached 87 for the loss of Matthew Wood, lbw to Wagg’s left arm swing.
