CARDIFF
(day two of four: Derbyshire won toss):
Derbyshire 289 (JL Clare 70 not out, CJL Rogers 69, CK Langeveldt 40, RDB Croft 4 for 93). Glamorgan 301 for three (GP Rees 104, DL Hemp 103 not out.
Lunch
A dramatic change in the weather brought leaden skies and persistent rain and ruled out any chance of play before lunch.
Tea
It was still cold and grey when play finally got under way 90 minutes after lunch but Gareth Rees and David Hemp played as though it was high summer in a second wicket partnership of 154 in 36 overs.
Rees, 48 overnight, moved confidently to his third championship century off 132 balls with 14 fours and was within five runs of his career-best 109 – against Derbyshire at Cardiff last year – when he fell lbw to Jake Needham.
By then, Hemp had passed fifty for the third time in successive championship innings, having faced 94 balls and hit eight fours.
Close
It did not get any better for the Derbyshire bowlers after tea. Michael Powell completed 10,000 runs in first-class cricket when he reached nine and went on to join Hemp in a third wicket stand of 97, which took Glamorgan into the lead.
Powell had made 48 off 72 balls with eight fours when Needham made one bounce and had him caught at slip but Hemp was not to be denied. He reached his first championship century off 164 balls with a six and 13 fours and was unbeaten on 103 when bad light ended play for the day.
