England coach Peter Moores' frustration at seeing his side's first Test victory push suffer a Lord's drenching was compounded when he lost seamer Matthew Hoggard for the second Test because of injury.

Yorkshire paceman Hoggard was ruled out of the match, which starts at Old Trafford in Manchester on May 23, when he broke his thumb playing for his county against Durham after being hit by a delivery by Steve Harmison.

Now Durham quick Harmison could be in line for a recall to the squad in place of the unfortunate Hoggard.

"I'm really frustrated for Matthew Hoggard," Moores said.

"How bad the break is we don't know. We just hope it's not too bad and he can get back playing as soon as possible. We'll have to look at what options we have got in terms of bringing players in for the next Test.

"Steve Harmison is a senior England player and he will come into consideration just like every other player."

Meanwhile, Moores said he was confident his team could still win the first Test against New Zealand after rain washed out all but 8.5 overs of the third day. With just two days remaining England are still 188 runs behind New Zealand's first innings total of 277 with the poor weather affecting all three days so far.

Moores remained upbeat after a another frustrating day at the home of cricket.

"If we can bat well on day four then we will get opportunities to force the game," Moores said. "We will have to wait and see how things go. Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook are batting very well and hopefully they can carry on their good form on Sunday."
