Anthony McGrath made a sublime undefeated 105 in 99 balls as Yorkshire overhauled Scotland's 244 on a cold and blustery day. The result means Yorkshire need to beat Lancashire on Wednesday to top the North Division in the Friends Provident Trophy and earn home advantage in the quarter-finals.
McGrath gave a taste of things to come when he eased his first ball to the mid-wicket fence off Deward Nel with perfect timing. He raced to 30 off 15 balls and 50 in 48 balls. His best shot was a straight drive for four off Gordon Goudie that equalled Michael Vaughan for technical perfection.
Yorkshire had been in a little bit of trouble at 59 for two when Jacques Rudolph, who made 82, shared a third-wicket stand of 164 with McGrath.
While McGrath struck boundaries, Rudolph accumulated with the deftness that will one day make him a legend in these parts to rival another adoptee, Darren Lehmann. But after his fifty, Rudolph showed another side to his game by striking a further five fours and a six off Goudie over mid-wicket.
Scotland's total of 244 could have been more. Yorkshire's attack lacked bite with Matthew Hoggard, Morne Morkel, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Ajmal Shahzad all injured and Scotland reached 90-0 with the ball hardly beating the bat.
Then Darren Gough found an extra yard to shatter Ryan Watson's stumps. Their attack was further weakened later when Deon Kruis pulled up with a hamstring injury and he is a serious doubt for Wednesday's game.
Scotland rebuilt through Colin Smith (60) and were well-set at 216 for five in the 46th over. But the last five wickets fell in five overs, the last four contributing just nine runs. It was Scotland's highest score by 50 runs this year, but not nearly enough.
