Daniel Flynn, the New Zealand batsman who had his smile rearranged when a bouncer from James Anderson struck his grille in the second Test at Old Trafford, is not expected to play in the three-day tour match at Northampton today. Flynn went into hospital yesterday to have a nerve removed from the bottom tooth adjacent to the one knocked out by Anderson.
There is also a cloud over Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand wicketkeeper, who has a stiff back and may play only as a batsman, with Gareth Hopkins taking the gloves. Stephen Peters will captain Northamptonshire in the absence of Nicky Boje, who is rested along with Andrew Hall, Lance Klusener and Johan van der Wath.
Yorkshire and Lancashire resume hostilities at Headingley Carnegie in the LV County Championship. Although Steven Patterson took two for 18 in the abandoned Friends Provident Trophy match between the sides on Wednesday, Yorkshire leave him out because of fears that his newly recovered knee will not survive four days.
Lancashire are without Stuart Law, the captain, who broke a finger in the nets on Tuesday. Luke Sutton continues as his deputy.
Yasir Arafat is rested by Kent for their game against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl and Azhar Mahmood replaces Martin Saggers, who has a finger injury. Graham Onions will miss Durham’s match away to Sussex at Hove with a heel injury. Matt Prior (Sussex) and Phil Mustard (Durham) will each be hoping to be named today as the England one-day wicketkeeper.
Surrey have selected Matthew Spriegel, the Loughborough University captain, in their squad in place of Alistair Brown for the match against Somerset at Whitgift School, Spriegel’s alma mater.
