Any cosy notions that Michael Vaughan, the England captain, may have held about Twenty20 Cup cricket were shattered when he was dismissed for a second-ball duck on his debut for Yorkshire in the competition.
Vaughan, playing in the tournament at his own request to bridge the gap between the New Zealand Test series and the one against South Africa, square drove a routine catch to Greg Smith at cover point off Charl Langeveldt.
Smith had earlier completed the first individual hundred by a Derbyshire player in the competition's history off the penultimate ball of the innings, facing 62 balls in all and hitting 12 fours and two sixes. His second-wicket partnership with Wavell Hinds, a fellow Kolpak player, an equally exuberant batsman, was worth 143 in 16 overs and even the best efforts of Darren Gough, along with Vaughan's tidy if rarely used off spin, could not prevent the Phantoms from accelerating to 181 for two. Hinds made 61 off 43 balls.
The Yorkshire fielders lacked precision and their batting had rough edges before Anthony McGrath, who scored 55 from 43 balls, shared a fourth-wicket stand of 70 in eight overs with Gerard Brophy. Even that did not stop the Phantoms from achieving a first win over Yorkshire in six Cup meetings in front of an estimated crowd of 5,000.
Langeveldt took four for nine in his four overs and growing desperation to increase the scoring tempo prompted the loss of six wickets for 34 runs in six overs. Nayan Doshi, the former Surrey left-arm spinner who had performed a hat-trick against Durham the previous evening, chipped in by dismissing Brophy, stumped down the leg side in his final over. It extended his competition record to 57 wickets.
Losing the wickets of Andrew Gale and Vaughan to the first ten balls of the innings and then Jacques Rudolph at 30 in the sixth over offered a remarkable contrast with the sturdy security of Derbyshire's batting.
While the Phantoms found gaps in the field, their opponents were guilty of lofting catches into deep.
It cast a shadow on Yorkshire's sequence of success that has taken them to the top of the County Championship table and into the semi-finals of the Friends Provident Trophy.
