Hampshire humbled the dismal and dispirited old warhorses of this competition, Surrey, to win their second match in two days with 11 balls to spare and give themselves an excellent chance of making the quarter-finals.
Probably, Hampshire need to beat Essex at home tomorrow and then away on Friday in their final two matches to be sure of qualifying, but one win may do now. Certainly, they will need to do that without their two England players, Dimitri Mascarenhas and Chris Tremlett, who have been on special leave from England’s one-day squad. Neither made vital contributions last night, but give the bowling real quality.
Chasing a modest 148 for victory in front of a crowd of 6,500, Michael Lumb and Ian Harvey hit 21 off the second over from Jade Dernbach and had 48 off the first four overs. Lumb went on to his second fifty of the competiton, making 63 off 45 balls before he was caught behind cutting at Chris Schofield in the fifteenth over.
Surrey’s night was summed up when Harvey lifted Schofield to deep mid-wicket and Scott Newman, running round, let a high catch through his hands and the ball went for four. Earlier, Michael Carberry had taken a remarkable, one-handed running catch, staying inside the mid-wicket boundary rope, to remove Abdul Razzaq, Surrey’s last danger man.
Surrey’s old-school top order again flopped. They scored 50 off the first five overs but when Alistair Brown drove Mascarenhas to long-off they faded to 64 off nine.
