Ross Lyons took four wickets as Scotland wrapped up a relatively comfortable win over Bermuda in the ICC Intercontinental Cup. Lyons finished with 4-55, but his side were made to work hard for a win that had looked to be a foregone conclusion with the home side chasing 373 to win in the second innings.
With Bermuda struggling at 65-4 on Saturday afternoon, the game seemed destined to not even make it into the final day, but a fine century from Steven Outerbridge (113) and some dogged batting from the rest of the Bermuda side gave Scotland some tense moments.
A stand of 45 for the last wicket between George O'Brien and Dwayne Leverock certainly didn't help to calm Scotland's nerves, but Lyons eventually brought things to an end when he had O'Brien caught by Richie Berrington with Bermuda still 107 runs short on 265.
“I have to say I was a little bit worried at one point when they were on the attack,” Fraser Watts, the Scotland captain, said. “I thought Stephen Outerbridge batted brilliantly and Bermuda have some very good players, including a couple of very good spinners in Dwayne [Leverock] and Rodney [Trott].
“They kept us out there a bit longer than we would have liked. However, we always knew we were going to get the last wicket. All the players did a great job and they fought so hard in tough conditions and it's great to get a win.”
The win keeps Scotland's faint hopes of qualifying for the next stage of the Intercontinental Cup alive, although Watts has all but ruled it out. “I don't think we can sneak in and qualify for the Intercontinental Cup,” he said. “I think we're pretty much out of it now, but you never know. We're off to Canada next where we'll be looking for another victory. It will be good to get some more games under our belt.”
