South Africa are 312-1, having survived another session wicketless. Are
England to blame?
MA: No, they have bowled quite well. They tried bowling short to Hashim
Amla - the correct approach - Monty Panesar showed good variation in bowling
over and round the wicket plus Michael Vaughan varied his field placings
well. Unfortunately, however, the pitch has offered the bowlers nothing and
South Africa have batted very well.
Does South Africa's success suggest England need to make changes for the
second Test?
MA: Well, Andrew Flintoff is certain to come into the equation,
particularly as he had scored an unbeaten 39 for Lancashire by lunch today,
while Ryan Sidebottom does not appear to be fully fit. So with the second
Test starting on Friday, the decision could be straightforward for the
selectors. If, however, Sidebottom is available, I suspect Paul Collingwood
could lose his place.
Should England consider adding a second quick bowler as well as Flintoff?
MA: No, it is important not to panic, particularly as Headingley, the
venue for the second Test offers more variation and swing than we have seen
at Lord's in this match. It is suited to an England attack that combines
seam and pace.
Does Lord's need to address the problem of its lifeless pitch?
MA: I don't think so. The head groundsman, Mick Hunt, was badly
hampered by the amount of rain that we had in the build-up to the Test. It
took all of the sting out of the pitch; there was nothing more that he could
do.
