Darren Pattinson was today called up for England to play South Africa in the second Test at Headingley as a replacement for Ryan Sidebottom, who is injured - a far cry from the days when he was tiling roofs in Australia.

The 29-year-old was born in Grimsby, relocated to Australia as a young boy and made his first-class debut in January 2007 after several seasons playing for Dandenong, a club side in Melbourne. To date, he has played in only 11 first class matches.

Expect big things from the Nottinghamshire swing bowler over the next five days: on his debut for Victoria he took four wickets for 87 runs against South Australia.

Pattinson joined Nottinghamshire at the start of this season after being recommended by David Hussey, the Australia batsman, in 2006 and impressing during net sessions.

He agreed a two-year deal with with the club in April and took eight wickets on his County Championship debut, against Kent.

His rise to fame did not go unnoticed by the ECB, who included him in England's provisional 30-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Pattinson, has taken 29 first-class wickets this season at a rate of 20.86 apiece.
