Kabir Ali is determined to make a name for himself and makes no secret of his disappointment at being overlooked by the England selectors. He did his cause no harm yesterday by completing his best figures of the season, six for 58, to help Worcestershire move into second place in the second division after a ten-wicket victory over Glamorgan.
Ali's first five-wicket haul this summer was a reward for a spell of relentlessly accurate and hostile fast bowling. He was well supported by Imran Arif, 24, the Pakistani-born seamer, who took five first-innings wickets on his championship debut and dismissed both openers after Glamorgan followed on 178 runs adrift. Needing 102 to complete an emphatic win, Stephen Moore and Daryl Mitchell made light work of the target with their second century opening partnership of the match.
Glamorgan remain rooted at the bottom of the table after four defeats in their past five matches. When they resumed at at 189 for seven yesterday, Jason Gillespie, the former Australia fast bowler, and James Harris held out for 23 overs in a stand of 79, but once Harris was caught behind, Ali finished them off by uprooting David Harrison's middle stump and finding the edge of Dean Cosker's bat.
Durham moved to the top of the first division with a ten-wicket win over Surrey at a blustery Guildford on Saturday. Well set on 261 for three, Surrey appeared to be on their way to a draw, but once Usman Afzal departed for 73, Stephen Harmison scythed through the tail, leaving Durham a victory target of 134. Mark Stoneman and Michael Di Venuto steered them home with ten overs in hand.
Somerset maintained their challenge by beating Kent by 246 runs at Taunton after Steffan Jones took five for 53, including the last three wickets.
A career-best five for 49 and match figures of seven for 89 by Ollie Rayner, the off spinner, helped Sussex to a ten-wicket victory against Hampshire at Arundel. It was the first time in eight years that Sussex had fielded a team without an overseas player.
In the second division, Warwickshire beat Middlesex at Uxbridge by an innings and 56 runs after a career-best five for 49 from Chris Woakes while Chris Rogers, the stand-in Derbyshire captain, scored his second century of the summer in their draw with Northamptonshire.
