A miserly spell by David Wainwright, the 23-year-old Yorkshire left-arm spinner, strangled Surrey on a good Guildford pitch. Surrey had recovered from a poor start to reach 75 for three after 16 overs, but Usman Afzaal and Chris Jordan could not work the angles and Wainwright's first four overs went for only three runs. With Adil Rashid bowling at the other end, Surrey had reached only 82 off 21 overs. A further 149 off 19 overs with no fielding restrictions was always going to be a challenge, even in the days of Twenty20, especially for Surrey.
Surrey may have to write off this season to experience after beginning their fourth competition with a characteristic defeat against a solid and more experienced Yorkshire side. The margin of defeat flattered them after Jade Dernbach hit Darren Gough's last over for twenty runs. Yorkshire, after two mini-collapses, had hit 36 off the last three overs, but 230 was eminently achievable.
Schofield played the innings of the game, hitting 58 off 44 balls, to all parts of the ground. It finally gave the capacity crowd of 4,857, something to cheer about.
But with 41 needed off the last three overs, he skied Gough and Rashid took an excellent catch over his shoulder, running back from mid-wicket.
Surrey were in trouble from the start. Anthony McGrath took an excellent reflex right-handed catch above his head at second slip off Tim Bresnan to remove Scott Newman in the second over, then Mark Ramprakash trudged off, looking disappointed when David Millns, the umpire, gave him out leg-before on the front foot, third ball. Bresnan was generating some pace and when James Benning spooned a mis-timed pull back to him, Surrey were 28 for three in the eighth over.
In Yorkshire's innings, every time one fell and momentum was lost, another rose to keep them going.
Andrew Gale was a touch lucky to top score for Yorkshire with 44 off 40 balls, but he hit Dernbach out of the attack. Pedro Collins began shaping the ball away from the left-handers and Rudolph edged a back-foot forcing shot to the wicketkeeper in the ninth over.
Ramprakash's juggling of the bowling attack turned to gold. Dernbach returned from the pavilion end and removed Gale's middle stump, with his first ball. With his first ball of his next over there was a lesser spotted brilliant catch by Afzaal, diving to his left at leg slip to remove Rana Naved ul-Hasan.
Ramprakash juggled again and Gerard Brophy was stumped charging Matthew Spriegel's second ball at the pavilion end.
McGrath and Adam Lyth rebuilt but became unnecessarily frustrated. A second collapse followed as Yorkshire lost three wickets to headless drives at Afzaal. Lyth and McGrath, who put on 59 off 11 overs, both perished driving to long-off. Bresnan drove to long-on and Yorkshire, 171 for seven in the 31st over, looked as if they might struggle to get to 200. But Rashid, who has struggled with the bat this season, made 33 off 34 balls, his highest score for 15 innings in all cricket. Both he and Richard Pyrah (26 off 25 balls) hit powerfully to leg as 36 came off the last three overs.
