Headingley (third day of five, South Africa won toss)
England 203 and 130-4 (AN Cook 46 not out, IR Bell 1 not out) South Africa 522

What must James Anderson have thought - after bowling 44 overs in seven sessions, batted for nearly two hours, taken a blow on the wrist and been felled by a bouncer - when Kevin Pietersen then breezed on and off the field as though England were in the final stages of a Twenty20 chase?
Trans-Pennine rivalry was put aside when Dale Steyn finally trapped Anderson leg-before with a full-length ball. The Yorkshire crowd rose to their feat and the England men on the viewing balcony, including Michael Vaughan, the captain, joined them in a deserved standing ovation.
Alastair Cook batted unobtrusively through the session, but Anderson's bravery caught the eye. His strokes, too. At one point he forced Paul Harris through extra cover like a genuine number three rather than a nightwatchman. But he needed pain killers when a Steyn bouncer hit his wrist and longer treatment when the next ball, short again, pushed the grille of his helmet into the right cheek. To onlookers the dismissal came as a relief.
With England by most accounts required to bat until tea tomorrow, Pietersen began in the only manner fitting, whipping his first ball to the fine leg ropes, his second past mid off and his fourth crashing square on the off side. And then an ineffectual push against Jacques Kallis resulted in an edge behind. Just what England needed: a five-ball 13.

Let's be honest, nobody really expected any other result. Kevin Pieterson talks a good game but if he really was that good he wouldn't have needed to leave South Africa to play test cricket.

Great to see the South African Team do so well after all the controversies surrounding all their sports team selections.England can have Pieterson ,he and his ego are not missed by the South Africans,on to the next test!

This centrally contracted band of losers! Everyone keeps forgetting that prior to Eng victories against NZ, they got whipped in Australia, lost a home series to India, got thrased in SL! And Vaughn is talking about being prepared for the ashes next time around! Waiting for the next round of excuse!
Daniel Hitchens, Melbourne,
Kevin Pietersen - the greatest batsman ever to have walked. I think the South Africans are more than happy that he's switched allegiance. Whilst their batsmen are hitting between 145-170, we are celebrating a self-righteous clown who's out for 35 (on a good day!)
