Nottinghamshire 213 (68 overs, MJ Wood 58, AC Voges 45, R Naved-ul-Hasan
3-63, MJ Hoggard 2-38, AU Rashid 2-12),
Yorkshire 72-5 (CE Shreck 2-25, MA Ealham 2-4)
Lunch
Only two of the 15 championship innings in Nottingham this year have reached 280 and, as Rana Naved-ul-Hasan came into the Yorkshire attack as second change to claim two wickets in his first three overs, the low-scoring pattern seemed set to continue.
Yorkshire’s bowling had been wayward hitherto, though Matthew Hoggard found lift with his 11th ball to have Bilal Shafayat caught for one at second slip.
But Nottinghamshire advanced calmly enough to 62 for one, although Mark Wagh was dropped off Tim Bresnan on 20, before Naved cut a ball back to bowl him for 33 and, without addition, had Samit Patel leg-before for a seventh-ball duck. Matthew Wood, however, played solidly through the session to bring up his fifty from 87 balls just before lunch.
Both sides showed two changes from their previous championship matches. Nottinghamshire dropped Will Jefferson for the first time this campaign, giving Shafayat a third start, and Paul Franks came in for Darren Pattinson, who had been on Test duty in Leeds.
For Yorkshire, a hamstring injury to Anthony McGrath, the captain, during pre-match warm-ups meant that Joe Sayers was hurriedly summoned from a 2nd XI game and Jaques Rudolph led the side. After repeated injury, Chris Taylor at last made his first championship appearance since returning to his native county from Derbyshire, replacing Gary Ballance.
Tea
With no partnership able to become genuinely established on this slow, begrudging pitch and each batsman fearing that his life-expectancy might be short, the pattern of the morning continued. Wood, the top scorer to date, eventually fell for 58 in the fifth over after lunch when Naved-ul-Hasan again found enough outswing to locate his edge.
Graeme Swann, playing within himself and fighting hard through 17 overs for 27, then pushed forward to Deon Kruis and also touched one to the wicketkeeper before Matthew Hoggard claimed the prize scalp by undoing Adam Voges for a diligent and watchful 45.
For the second time, Hoggard hit the one spot for bowlers at the Ratcliffe Road End from which the ball has climbed and, attempting to push to leg, Voges played from high on the bat to Tim Bresnan at short cover. Such has been the lack of pace and bounce in this pitch that Hoggard operated for the most part to one slip but two men in close, at cover and short mid-wicket. Since 275 may prove a good score in the conditions, the game remained entirely in the balance at tea.
Close
An explosive start to the final session saw five wickets go in 23 balls as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 213 and Taylor, in his first championship innings since rejoining Yorkshire, fell to Charlie Shreck's lift for a second-ball duck.
It meant that, in an hour either side of tea, the home side declined from a highly promising 170 for five though the final total is proving a challenging one at a ground where the ball has been dominant.
When Shreck produced a superb ball to end Sayers's first innings since early June for nine, Yorkshire were 18 for two by their sixth over. Then, after a 50-run stand, they lost three wickets in the last 15 minutes, including two to Mark Ealham's inswing. Crucially, Jaques Rudolph, their key performer this year, was leg-before for 19 and, with half their wickets lost, his side were 141 behind at the close.
The first to fall in the collapse was Mark Ealham who, playing tentatively to an Adil Rashid ball that turned and lifted, was held at slip for 14. Chris Read, pushing forward, edged Tim Bresnan for 19, while Paul Franks, run out when he and Andre Adams hesitated over a single, and Shreck, caught at silly point, went without scoring.
