HEADINGLEY
Day one of four (Surrey won toss)
Headingley Carnegie (first day of four; Surrey won toss): Surrey 204 (56.1 overs, SJ Walters 40, GJ Kruis 5-47); Yorkshire (50-0, 16 overs)
No play before lunch
No play was possible before an early lunch was taken at 12.30 in Leeds, where the toss has not yet been made and the teams have not, therefore, been officially declared.
If no further rain arrives, play will now begin at 13.10, continuing to 18.30 after the addition of the extra half-hour. A total of 16 overs have already been deducted from the day's minimum quota of 96.
A badly injury-hit Yorkshire are certain to be without Rana Naved-ul-Hasan with a neck problem, Anthony McGrath with a pulled hamstring, Matthew Hoggard with a shoulder niggle and Joe Sayers, who is understood to have sustained an eye injury in practice on Tuesday. Richard Pyrah is expected to start a championship match for the third time this year and David Wainwright, the left-arm spinner, to make the fourth championship appearance of his career.
Surrey, who missed six players in their defeat to Durham last week, hope to welcome back most of their absentees, though Mark Butcher has targeted the next game of the campaign, against Somerset in Taunton in mid August, for his return after a knee operation.
Headingley Carnegie (first day of four; Surrey won toss): Surrey 121-5 (38 overs, SJ Walters 40, GJ Kruis 3-17)
TEA
The suspicion that Mark Ramprakash should have fielded first on winning the toss after play eventually began under heavy skies at 13.30 was perhaps confirmed when the captain himself was the first of three Surrey batsmen to go in a fraught seven-over period that saw only two singles scrambled.
Deon Kruis, the South African fast medium bowler who has made little impact over the last season and a half, suddenly revisited his best to claim three wickets in an innings for the first time since September, 2006. With Yorkshire bowling loosely through the first 19 overs, only Scott Newman, leg-before for 29 to Tim Bresnan's full inswing, had fallen until Kruis struck thrice in 22 balls.
Ramprakash was bowled by a beauty for six, Jon Batty went without score to an outstanding catch at third slip by Pyrah and Usman Afzaal, another victim of swing, was leg-before for one. When Bresnan, back for a second spell, relieved Kruis at the Rugby Ground End he soon had Stewart Walters pulling to deep mid-wicket, a soft dismissal that ended an obdurate innings of 40 from 84 balls as Surrey continued their slump from 69 for one to 94 for five before tea eventually brought respite at 16.05.
In the end, Yorkshire showed three changes from their defeat against Nottinghamshire, with Pyrah and Wainwright playing as expected and Darren Gough leading the side in the Championship for the first time in four weeks. This was in the absence of Sayers, Rana Naved and Hoggard.
For Surrey, four players returned from injury or illness compared with their defeat to Durham. Ramprakash replaced Chris Murtagh and, in the attack, Matt Nicholson, Saqlain Mushtaq and Pedro Collins came back for Chris Schofield, Murtaza Hussain and Jimmy Ormond.
CLOSE
Kruis continued to figures he had only ever bettered in South Africa when, returning five for 47, he helped reduce Surrey to 167 for nine until some tenth-wicket flailing added 36 from 33 balls. After Adil Rashid removed Matt Nicholson, leg-before to the top-spinner, for 25, Kruis knocked over Chris Jordan and Matthew Spriegel, bowled for 29 from 75 determined balls.
He should have had a sixth success but Pedro Collins was dropped on on nought at second slip. At least Kruis removed the same batsman for 21, albeit with a run-out, to leave an equally adventurous Saqlain unbeaten with 22 as Surrey finished on 204. To compound their problems, Yorkshire's openers then replied with the county's best first-wicket stand for 13 months.
