Darren Pattinson took a back seat when Nottinghamshire and Durham locked horns at the top of the LV County Championship yesterday but that does not mean that he has given up hope of playing for England again.
The Anglo-Australian fast bowler made it clear that, while he is contracted to playing for Victoria next winter (as an overseas player, courtesy of the England selectors), his ambition now is to add to the solitary cap that caused such a furore during the second npower Test against South Africa at Headingley Carnegie.
Pattinson and his family have been upset by all the adverse publicity surrounding his selection but he appears determined to put the experience behind him and make the most of his undoubted ability.
“It's worked out well for me at Nottinghamshire,” he said. “When I signed, my only target was to prove that I could cut it at county level. Things have moved on a lot quicker than I thought and I've set myself new goals, which include earning further recognition for England. I've got a young family who have travelled halfway around the world with me and they have found the last month really difficult. The media interest that has surrounded my selection was new to us and something that, naively, I didn't expect.”
Pattinson, who had taken 29 championship wickets at 20 runs apiece before his England call-up, failed to add to his tally yesterday and it was Charlie Shreck, the England Lions fast bowler, who upstaged Stuart Broad and Stephen Harmison, who both arrived at lunchtime after being released from the England squad. Shreck had already had Michael di Venuto leg before and Mark Stoneman caught behind in his opening spell and he went on to have Dale Benkenstein caught at cover and bowl Callum Thorp to finish with four for 69.
Andre Adams, who was to be replaced by Broad, played his part by bowling Shivnarine Chanderpaul off a big inside edge before Broad finally got into the act. He had Ben Harmison caught behind in his third over and then broke the resistance of Will Smith, who had fought hard to hold Durham together against his former county.
Smith had been there for more than four hours in making 85 off 182 balls with 13 fours when he drove Broad tamely to mid-on. Samit Patel chipped in with his left arm spin, bowling Phil Mustard as he tried to sweep and having Liam Plunkett stumped, and Broad had the last word, claiming Stephen Harmison caught at second slip to finish with three for 47, his best figures in three games for Nottinghamshire.
