Day three of four (Leicestershire win toss)
Warwickshire, with all second-innings wickets in hand, are 146 runs behind Leicestershire
Lunch
A destructive spell of three for 17 in 18 balls from Nadeem Malik, a fast-medium bowler, from the Bennett end energised Leicestershire after Warwickshire resumed at 17 without loss. Malik began by dismissing Darren Maddy, a former Leicestershire captain, caught at the wicket off an away swinger and completed a double wicket maiden when Michael Powell lost his middle stump for his third championship duck of the summer. Navdeep Poonia drove a straightforward catch to short extra cover six overs later and Leicestershire took a fourth wicket when Jonathan Trott, on the back foot, edged a catch to Paul Nixon off Claude Henderson. Warwickshire were struggling at 85 for four, leaving Jim Troughton and Tony Frost to rebuild the innings. Lunch was taken at 111 for four.
Tea
Troughton and Frost went on to add 108 in 41 overs for the fifth wicket as Warwickshire aimed for a total of 283 to avoid following on. Josh Cobb, 17, a leg- spinner and son of Russell, a member of Leicestershire’s coaching staff, split the partnership by taking a maiden first-class wicket with his eighth ball when Malik held a juggling catch at square leg to dismiss Frost.
Johan Malcolm, 22, an off-spinner, had also begun well by restricting the scoring tempo and Leicestershire had the unusual luxury of using three slow bowlers with Henderson also being employed. Warwickshire had added 81 runs in the afternoon session and looked to Troughton, on 49, and Ant Botha to extend their revival.
Close
The innings disintegrated to 267 all out and the follow on enforced after the second new ball proved fatal for Warwickshire. They lost their last three wickets for 14 runs in 22 balls with Malik finishing with five for 57, his third five-wicket return of the summer. It was a deserved reward for his swing bowling and penetration.
He ousted Ant Botha and Naqqash Tahir, both caught at the wicket and Garnett Kruger bowled Neil Carter with Warwickshire still needing 16 runs to avoid batting again. The most spectacular dismissal was that of Ian Salisbury first ball. He lost his off stump when offering no stroke to a ball that nipped back from Allenby.
