HEADINGLEY
Day three of four (Surrey won toss)
Surrey 204 (56.1 overs, SJ Walters 40, GJ Kruis 5-47); Yorkshire 414-9 (126 overs, AU Rashid 67 not out, JA Rudolph 64, AW Gale 63, GJ Kruis 50 not out)
LUNCH
Some outstanding work by Yorkshire's unsung groundsman, Andy Fogarty, and his team meant that play began on time though the outfield, already soaked through Thursday afternoon, had been awash again at 4am.
It did not take long for Chris Jordan to break an opening stand that had begun on Wednesday evening when, with the 11th ball of the day, he had Chris Taylor leg-before for 23, whipping across the line of a fine, full inswinger. Taylor, who had not added, duly ended a 97-ball innings without a boundary.
Andrew Gale, his overnight partner, also fell in the first 35 minutes when he flapped at Jade Dernbach's wide outswinger and was taken behind for 63. Adam Lyth, the 20-year old who made a maiden century in his previous innings, again showed what a genuinely high-quality prospect he is with a serious of technically impeccable shots until, growing too ambitious, he tried to drive Matt Nicholson on the up and edged to Jon Batty for 36.
It was a curious over, entered in the book as a wicket-maiden, though five penalty runs were later incurred when Batty, leaping across to prevent byes, deflected the ball onto the fielding helmet. By lunch, Yorkshire had reduced the deficit to 15 runs and would clearly want to post 400 and declare before the close.
TEA
A series of errors against largely defensive Surrey bowling and run-saving fields saw Yorkshire fail to make the progress they sought in the afternoon when 93 more runs were added from 35 overs as three men fell.
A curious shot from Gerry Brophy, attempting a one-day dab at a full outswinger, brought a superb low, diving catch from his opposite number, Batty, and was followed, 30 minutes later, by the mix-up that ran out Jacques Rudolph, his South African compatriot, for 64 from 106 balls. Brophy had been "caught" at second slip off Jordan from what proved a no-ball immediately after lunch but had advanced to only 23 when undone by the same bowler.
Rudolph, pushing to point, started, stopped and started again but failed to beat Stewart Walters's direct hit and Richard Pyrah, his partner in confusion, soon played on for 12, driving ambitiously in the first over with the new ball as Pedro Collins gained his only success so far. By the time tea arrived at 4pm, Yorkshire were 78 runs ahead, but their hopes of full batting points were fading.
CLOSE
A magnificently enjoyable and unbeaten last-wicket stand of 87 from 98 balls, in which Deon Kruis belted his first Yorkshire fifty - his first in England, indeed – and Adil Rashid posted his second of the campaign, secured an unlikely final batting bonus point after the side had been reduced to 327 for nine.
With Tim Bresnan undone by a fine, low slip catch from Jordan for ten and David Wainwright's sixth championship innings ending in high comedy when, hooking, he swung himself off his feet and landed on his stump, it seemed that Darren Gough was Yorkshire's last hope of even a fourth point. But the captain was soon bowled for one and the heroics were left to Kruis's exhuberance and Rashid's more staunch resolve. Yorkshire, likely to declare overnight, have a lead of 210.
