Was it the right decision for Michael Vaughan to stand down as England captain?
He clearly felt that the job had become too much for him and was beginning to overwhelm him, therefore it was correct. In terms of cricketing nous and his ability as a captain, he is still the best man for the job in my mind. It touched a nerve with me when he spoke about how it was affecting his private life because the job does become all-consuming.
Is he right to want to continue playing for England under a different captain?
Yes. At 33 he still has a little bit of cricket left in him and he should be able to make a good contribution in the Ashes next year. Without having the burden of the captaincy on his shoulders he should be free to concentrate on doing what he does best and that is scoring runs.
Where does Vaughan stand in the pantheon of great England captains?
He is right up there with the greatest captains of this modern era, from the 1980s onwards. He has more wins than anybody else and he led England to the Ashes for the first time in 18 years. He is also a wonderful player and scored plenty of runs while he was leading the side.
Who should take over the captaincy - Kevin Pietersen?
Taking on Pietersen would be a big gamble. My great fear is that the captaincy would reduce his match-winning potential. We have seen in the past with Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff that the captaincy proved too much of a burden and as soon as they went back to being just players, their game improved again. Some players, such as Graham Gooch, actually improved when they were given the captaincy but Pietersen cannot get much better - he is already outstanding. I have no problem with there being a split captaincy with somebody like Andrew Strauss leading the Test team and Pietersen or Paul Collingwood captaining the one-day side.

A rejoinder to Ian's comments. 5-0 drubbing by the Aussies was expected. It was all in a series work for Oz and no great shame for the Poms. This was not, and Smith has surpassed himself not just with the bat but with reflected glory of seeing off two english captains. Dont read too much into it.
Rohan Wijeyaratna, Shanghai, China
Hope Pietersen does become England Test captain that too against SA where he was born.As England are a multi-cultural country, it would send the right message in a globalised world and somewhat trobled times we all are living in.Interesting to see a great player leading a national side.Sachin failed
Pritam Sinha, New Delhi, India
So during the last two tours that Smith has led to England, he has forced two England captains to stand down. No mean achievement. Not even a 5-0 drubbing by the Aussies did that.
Ian, Joburg, South Africa
"Atherton is no position to judge good English captains, because he himself was a bad one" - ????? simply illogical. read Athers and you understand that he is the best comentator on cricket currently; his record as captain is irrelevant tho his experience is no doubt invaluable.
OJ, Frant, UK
Pieterson would be a bad choice for the captaincy, he is selfish and egocentric and we have seen before how he has put himself before the team by playing for himself rather than thinking of the team. Strauss is a gentleman much like Vaughan.
taryn, london,
Kevin Pietersen is the only logical choice as captain under the current circumstances.
The thoughts of Mike Atherton a captain who only notched up 1 win out of every 4 games he captained have a fear of KP success stench associated with them.
Key's suggestion is about as funny as Pattinsons was
acker, Riverina NSW, Australia
Beyond me why he should chuck it in. Well paid .. great honour ... will never get another chance at this level in life. All thrown away. Madness. Oh... very fine Bat too.
John, Lisbon, Portugal
Robert Key should captain England in both forms of the game.
J Sawyer, Brisbane , Australia
to the delightful sarah of southampton - if you are not prepared to support England regardless of who is captain, coach or playing then you are not a true fan and won't be missed. As for his glory shot, this was the same glory shot that Collingwood played? It was poorly executed by KP, that's all.
Allan, Ottawa, Canada
Perhaps it is the fact that he was less successful than Vaughan which makes Atherton a good person to judge his captaincy. Pietersen should do a good job, he is the type of person who will work at captaincy until he excels at it. Is he enough of a team man, though? Plaudits to MV - a great captain.
Jan, Stellenbosch, South Africa
johh b...I cannot disgree more about KP as a man. he celebrates other's achievements even more than his own. he is more a team man than most. that cheat abdv made gestures at kp following kp 1st inning dismissal...kp overlooked this to congratulate cheat after his 100. kp is a real man!
phil durrant, York,
agree that kp as captain might concentrate more...it seems that the game is too easy for him and sometimes he does not give bowlers the respect they deserve due to his rich talent and the arrogance that goes with it... would he have made that glory shot if he was captain? i think not...
phil durrant, York,
Oh dear, John B, isn't 94 in his lst innings good enough for you?
So we'll drop him for doing well??
Are you for real?
Allan, Skipton, UK
Atherton is no position to judge good English captains, because he himself was a bad one. However Vaughn has had Flintoff the most beligerent player on earth and the ploy of; setting a field to give McKenzie the impression that there was going to be a barrage of shortpitched bowling ; worked.
Peter Casie Chetty, Liverpool, United Kingdom
I'm really saddened today that Vaughan will not get chance to captain in the Ashes again. I, and I'm not alone in this among friends and acquaintances, would not wish an England team well that's captained by KP. The man's head is big enough already. His "glory" shot on Friday says it all.
Sarah Connor, Southampton,
kp seems to lose concentration at times, as if being at the crease is not quite enough to sustain all his interest - maybe the additional mindplay of captaincy will be the missing link that engages his brain at all times?
deb, london, england
Pietersen, a South African, is not a team player, or, as a person, someone to admire. l believed that dropping him for the next test might focus his mind. Cricket is a team game. Sadly tho the present team is not one to captain easily given the lack of talent there.
john b, leeds, uk
Vaughan is a great Captain. I don't see why he cannot come back as Captain after a sabbatical, which, he clealry needs. A spell concentrating on his batting will do him no harm. He may have stopped being a great test batsman but he could regain that form. His absence may help emerging players.
Gavrilo Prinzip, Bromley, UK
To say kp cant get better is not true. he could and should be averaging over 60. being captain may make him concentrate more.
