Rose Bowl (Day two of four, Hampshire won toss)
Hampshire 316 v Somerset 41 for one
Lunch
Michael Lumb completed his maiden hundred for Hampshire, converting a half-century into a three-figure effort at the 13th opportunity from 198 balls with 15 fours. He did not give a chance to hand and scored roughly two thirds of his county's runs while he was at the crease to make for a frustrating morning for Somerset.
Andrew Caddick, the acting Somerset captain, saw spin as the most likely route to success and used the slow left-arm bowling of Arul Suppiah in tandem with Ian Blackwell before switching briefly to Wes Durston's off-breaks before lunch. However, the only reward came when Liam Dawson pushed down the wrong line to a Blackwell arm-ball.
Tea
Sean Ervine and Dimitri Mascarenhas raised the tempo of the Hampshire innings before Somerset took the last four wickets for 44 runs assisted by a pair of blinding catches at second slip by Marcus Trescothick. With three bowling points, Somerset moved joint top of Division One for the first time since May.
After Michael Lumb (107) edged behind, Ervine capitalised on a succession of long hops to complete an attractive fifty and the demise of David Balcombe proved the cue for Mascarenhas to look to attack. Greater adventure brought more opportunities for Somerset and light rain appeared to have freshened the pitch.
Close
Bad light and then increasingly heavy rain punctuated Somerset's attempt to build on a full haul of bowling points after Marcus Trescothick had whipped the first ball of the innings, from the newly capped James Tomlinson, to the mid-wicket boundary.
The innings was interrupted after seven, eight and, finally 10 overs, but not before Imran Tahir, the Pakistan leg-spinner, had been introduced into the Hampshire attack. Neither Trescothick nor Arul Suppiah, who is playing in place of the injured Justin Langer, suffered early qualms.
