Rose Bowl (Final day of four, Hampshire won toss)
Hampshire (10pts) 316 and 196-1 (MA Carberry 88 not out, MJ Lumb 83 not out, 63 overs) drew with Somerset (12pts) 436
Lunch
Somerset gave themselves a chance of securing victory to consolidate their position at the top of the first division when Peter Trego, continuing to enjoy a purposeful match, bowled James Adams little more than five minutes before lunch after Hampshire had begun to chip away at a first-innings deficit of 120.
The visiting side had completed their initial target of securing a fifth batting point before Ian Blackwell, the main source of quick runs, succumbed chasing a wide ball from Dimitri Mascarenhas. Blackwell's 129 occupied 269 balls in all and Mascarenhas followed up with the remaining two Somerset wickets.
Tea
By batting through the entire second session the two Michaels, Carberry and Lumb, effectively sentenced the game to a draw. The only chance to hand came when Marcus Trescothick at slip dropped Carberry on 68 off Wes Durston, by which time Hampshire, with nine wickets in hand, already held an overall lead.
The off-spin of Durston proved more effective than the disappointing slow left arm of Ian Blackwell, who caused little threat turning the ball into the left-handed pair. The pitch has not worn as much as expected and both Lumb, the first-innings century-maker, and Carberry completed fifties at a sedate pace.
Close
Hands were shaken at the earliest opportunity to confirm a draw that had seemed inevitable once Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb steered Hampshire, who have climbed out of the relegation area, into lunch with a single wicket down. The second-wicket pair were still there at the close, largely untroubled from first to last.
The closest that Somerset came to splitting the stand after tea came immediately on the resumption when Wes Durston almost ran out Lumb, who added an unbeaten 83 from 152 balls to his first innings hundred. Carberry, yet to register a century this season, took 219 balls over his 88 as turn remained very slow.
