If their reply never quite merited the accompaniment of Jimmy Page's guitar, Warwickshire still made a rousing, but vain, attempt at a demanding target of 239. Led by Jonathan Trott's fifth limited-overs fifty of the summer, it was certainly better than their kazoo-and-swanee-whistle display at Cardiff three days before when, at one stage, the Bears were 17 for seven.

Jade Dernbach, that underrated one-day bowler, called the final tune for Surrey. With Warwickshire needing 50 from 35 balls, he claimed four wickets in 15 balls, including Trott for 92 when he was magnificently caught by Jonathan Batty at the stumps.

Dernbach had Ant Botha taken at long-on earlier in that 35th over and was swiped by Ian Salisbury to the same position in his next. He was the only seam bowler to leave his mark.

It was the spinners who had checked Surrey's onslaught. Five seam bowlers went for a total of 177 runs at 7.37 per over, yet Botha and Salisbury between them conceded 57 at 3.56. Surrey scored only 53 runs for four wickets from the 15 overs after they had reached 105 for one from the first 16.

James Benning, with 74, led the initial attack and was supported by Mark Ramprakash's 54 and 40 by Matthew Spriegel, both unbeaten.
