SCARBOROUGH
(day one of four; Yorkshire won toss)
Kent 227 (M van Jaarsveld 107, JL Denly 50); Yorkshire 85 for 2 (RH Joseph 2 for 26)
Tea
Matthew Hoggard picked up his first wicket in the second over after lunch when he had Geraint Jones caught behind and Andrew Lyth ran out Ryan McLaren with a brilliant, left-handed pick-up and throw from cover to reduce Kent to 108 for six.
Martin van Jaarsveld was still there, however, and he received dogged support from James Tredwell in a seventh wicket stand of 57 in 15 overs, to which Tredwell contributed nine off 51 balls.
Tredwell had just been dropped by Hoggard off Adil Rashid when he was leg before to Gough and Amjad Khan chipped Hoggard to Vaughan at square leg but Van Jaarsveld continued to defy Yorkshire with batting of the highest class.
He became the first Kent player to score 1,000 championship runs this season when he passed 70 and went on to complete his fourth century off 133 balls with two sixes and 14 fours. It was a surprise when he was last man out, leg before to Anthony McGrath.
Close
Vaughan, playing his first innings since July 31, did not look like a batsman who was about to storm back into the England team even though batting conditions were as good as they had been all day.
He was off the mark sixth ball with a legside single and picked up two fours, one gloved down the legside off Amjad Khan, the other eased to third man off Robbie Joseph, but then drove ambitiously at a wide ball from Joseph and was caught behind.
Andrew Gale soon followed, leg before to Joseph, and though, McGrath was dropped at first slip off Ryan McLaren just before the close, he and Jacques Rudolph showed what a good toss it had been for Yorkshire to win by putting on an unbroken 48 in the evening sunshine.
