Sussex 292-5 (CD Hopkinson 53 not out, RSC Martin-Jenkins 13 not out, 96 overs) v Nottinghamshire
Tea
Murray Goodwin completed 1,000 runs in a season for the seventh time in his eight prolific years at Sussex during an afternoon session with something for both sides. Mark Ealham claimed two wickets and Chris Adams was run out after a poor call from Goodwin, but the innings still went along at a good tempo.
Nottinghamshire found more movement after lunch and Darren Pattinson was aghast at the failure to win a decision for caught behind with Goodwin on 11 during an improved second spell. A brilliant leg-side catch by Chris Read accounted for Andrew Hood and Mike Yardy nibbled an out-swinger having made 64 from 119 balls.
Close
Despite the loss of Murray Goodwin (79 from 164 balls) as soon as Nottinghamshire took the second new ball, Sussex had the better of the third session and the first day overall. The sight of Rob Ferley beating the bat with his left arm spin in the final session will hardly discourage the home side.
Carl Hopkinson played cautiously for his half-century from 135 balls, but Goodwin was progressing without difficulty until Darren Pattinson won an lbw decision. There was a slightly tired look to the Nottinghamshire seam attack and Ferley rejoined the attack with the new ball only five overs old.
