Maddy duly went on to complete 12,000 first-class runs in his career but the prospect of another hundred disappeared when he lost concentration after making 73 and miscued a cut to cover point where Wagg held the catch off the fourth ball in Jonathan Clare’s second spell. He had faced 135 balls and struck ten fours in an innings pointing the way towards a sound position for Warwickshire.

Jonathan Trott followed Maddy to a half-century with eight fours off 105 balls, his seventh in the championship this summer as his team headed towards a batting bonus point. Starting this match in second place behind Worcestershire still did not obscure their problems in forcing victories at Edgbaston where all six previous championship games this season had been drawn.

Bad light restricted play to a total of 9.3 overs in three spells after tea, 22.3 overs being lost, but Warwickshire had duly reached 200, courtesy of a no-ball from Wagg. By then, the fourth-wicket partnership between Trott and Jim Troughton was worth 71 runs in 27 overs and had become the third half-century stand in succession. Trott’s innings of 62, with eight fours, had occupied 147 balls and Troughton had made 22 off 82 balls.
