Durham's reignited their bid for the County Championship title after a rollercoaster first day of their match against Hampshire at Basingstoke. Durham were bowled out before tea for 156 after winning the toss and deciding to bat, Dimi Mascarenhas finishing with figures of 5-46. But the home side collapsed from 65-2 to 65-6 at the close and still trail by 91, Mark Davies taking five of the wickets to fall with an inspired spell of bowling.
Second-placed Nottinghamshire faired little better as fifties from Yardy and Goodwin took Sussex to 250-4 at tea.
Michael Vaughan could only manage a disappointing ten runs in Yorkshire's reply to Kent's first innings. Hoggard, Kruis, and Gough took early wickets to reduce Kent to 108-6, but the visitors recovered to reach 227, largely thanks to a hundred from Martin van Jaarsveld.
The first day of Lancashire's match with Surrey at Blackpool's Stanley Park was washed out, and the umpires fear a prompt start tomorrow morning is also unlikely unless conditions dramatically improve.

I have been disappointed all summer with the cricket coverage in the paper copy of the Times. To provide a brief summary and then suggest that "extended" (i.e. the proper) coverage is on line is not what I have come to expect in 30 years reading the paper. Football gets preference even off season.
