After losing a fifth wicket with the total at 126, Glamorgan made a spirited fightback in the afternoon session thanks largely to Mark Wallace’s high score of the season, 72. The Welsh wicketkeeper shared a sixth wicket stand of 76 in 15 overs with Alex Wharf before the former England one day bowler was bowled by Monty Panesar for 36.

Wallace, who had reached his third 50 of the season from 78 balls after hitting three successive fours off David Lucas, fell eight overs later when he was brilliantly caught one-handed at slip by Andrew Hall of Panesar.

Gareth Rees was the first to be dismissed after lunch when he suffered the unusual indignity of having all three of his stumps knocked out of the ground by Johan van der Wath. The left handed opener made a stubborn 53 that was a valuable effort after Glamorgan’s early problems on a lively pitch that offered the Northants seamers plenty of encouragement. At tea, Robert Croft was undefeated with 26 while Jason Gillespie had made two.
