EDGBASTON
(day two of four: Warwickshire won toss)
Lunch
Derbyshire, with all first-innings wickets in hand, are 393 runs behind Warwickshire
Three wickets in four overs for eight runs with the second new ball transformed the complexion of the Warwickshire innings, despite Jonathan Trott's battling innings of 90 not out off 230 balls. Charl Langeveldt, Deryshire’s South African Test fast bowler, dismissed both Jim Troughton and Ant Botha leg-before with in-swingers and Tim Ambrose clipped a catch to Dan Redfern at short mid-wicket off Graham Wagg.
Warwickshire stumbled from their overnight 209 for three but Trott stood firm, reproducing his stoic efforts of the previous day. After making 76, he was unmoved when Tom New claimed a catch down the leg side off Langeveldt, who looked unimpressed by the not out decision. He expressed his feelings with the next ball, a bouncer that forced Trott into swift evasive action.
Tea
Trott and Ian Salisbury led the way as Warwickshire plundered 162 runs in the 36-over second session. They shared a 110-run partnership in 26 overs with Salisbury the main aggressor in making 64, with eight fours and two sixes, off 84 balls. His urgency meant that Trott was relieved of quick-scoring duties along the way to the fourteenth hundred of his career that spanned almost six hours and included 11 fours.
Jonathan Clare split the stand when Salisbury top edged an intended hook to New but their enterprise illuminated the afternoon. Nayan Doshi, a slow left-arm bowler, had personified economy until Salisbury struck him for two straight sixes and two fours. Trott strode on, reaching 160 from 337 balls and bringing Warwickshire full batting points with two overs to spare. The supportive Chris Woakes, 19, made a championship-best 44 not out.
Close
Woakes shared a stand of 103 in 24 overs before Trott was dismissed for 181, one run short of completing a thousand in the championship this season.
The declaration at 476 for nine followed immediately, leaving Derbyshire to score 327 to avoid following on. Chris Rogers reached four figures in first-class cricket this summer while making an assured half-century off 45 balls in an unbroken 83-run opening partnership with Paul Borrington. They played with more freedom and urgency than Warwickshire had in the early stages of their innings.
