(second day of four; Sussex won toss)
Nottinghamshire 259-2 (MA Wagh 31 not out, AG Prince 20 not out, 72 overs) Sussex 339
Lunch
Charlie Shreck, overlooked for the initial overs, took 4 for 14 when he finally rejoined the attack as Sussex lost their last five wickets for only 21 runs in 11 overs on a chilly morning by the coast. The collapse meant that the home side added only a single batting point on the second day.
Keeping a straight line and allowing the ball to skid through, Shreck clipped Carl Hopkinson's bails before tempting Robin Martin-Jenkins to push to short extra cover and trapping Will Beer, on debut, lbw for a second-ball duck - his 50th first-class wicket of the season. The tail offered flimsy resistance.
Tea
Nottinghamshire dominated the second session of the day with their best opening stand of the season. The makeshift partners of Will Jefferson and Bilal Shafayat, with more than a foot separating them in height, both made fifties in capitalising on the inexperience of the Sussex spin attack.
Jefferson was first to the landmark, in 78 balls with four fours and a brace of sixes swept in successive overs against Ollie Rayner. Will Beer found a little turn on his debut and was not the only bowler who struggled for length against batsmen with vastly different forward strides. Shafayat reached his fifty from 100 balls shortly before the break
Close
Although Sussex eventually removed both Nottinghamshire openers the visiting side will feel happy with a final session that produced 124 runs and took them into the territory of bonus points. None of the batsmen allowed the young spin pair of Ollie Rayner and Will Beer to settle on a helpful pitch.
A smart leg-side catch by Andrew Hodd undid Jefferson, whose 80 came from 128 balls, but Shafayat took that as a cue to up his pace and raised his second hundred in four weeks with a straight six against Will Beer, kissing the pitch in celebration, before being bowled by Jason Lewry trying to clip into the leg side.
