DERBY
(day one of four; Derbyshire won toss)
Glamorgan have scored 257 for eight wickets against Derbyshire
Lunch
Jonathan Clare helped Derbyshire to justify their decision to put Glamorgan into bat by taking the wickets of David Hemp and Michael Powell in his first six overs on a damp, green tinged pitch. Hemp was leg-before to Clare’s first ball and Powell lost his off stump in spectacular style to be dismissed for a sixth-ball duck.
Graham Wagg chipped in with the wicket of Tom Maynard leg before and it took a resolute innings of 39 not out from Gareth Rees to sustain Glamorgan. Even Rees, on 25, had an escape when Tom New dropped him off Clare, who had ousted Hemp four balls earlier.
Tom Lungley had returned to Derbyshire’s championship side almost four months after being absent through toe and side injuries. It was a timely reappearance with fellow seam bowler Charl Langeveldt ruled out by knee trouble.
Tea
Langeveldt, a South African who has taken 50 championship wickets this season, and Chris Rogers, an Australia Test batsman, were awarded their Derbyshire caps during the interval and Wagg celebrated their achievement by adding the wicket of Jamie Dalrymple with the third ball after lunch. Lungley, diving to his right at second slip, held the catch one-handed.
Rees completed a half-century with six fours and a six off 98 balls but he lost two more partners to Clare, whose figures were four for 15 off 12 overs. His miserly run concession included two fours through the slips. Mark Wallace lobbed a catch to mid-on and Alex Wharf was leg-before when playing across the line in a moderate Glamorgan batting display with the honourable exception of Rees, 23, a Bath University graduate, who was 93 not out at tea.
Close
A century off 197 balls with 11 fours and two sixes maintained a remarkable sequence of scores for Rees against Derbyshire. It was his third hundred off their attack, alongside two half-centuries in six innings. When Rees was leg-before, playing back to a full length ball from Wagg, he had made 126 from 242 balls, with 13 fours and two sixes. His partnership with Robert Croft had been worth 90 and guided Glamorgan towards a second batting point. Clare returned figures of four for 16 in 13 overs.
