Darren Pattinson and Charlie Shreck devastated Somerset's top order as the LV County Championship Division One leaders gained an early grip on the first day of their match at Trent Bridge.
The visitors, second in the table with a game in hand, were in trouble from the moment they opted to bat, losing Australian Justin Langer first ball. Marcus Trescothick made 35 from 48 balls but Pattinson removed him and although another former England international Ian Blackwell chipped in with 24 Somerset were reduced to 143 for seven.
Elsewhere, Worcestershire added just 57 runs for their last five wickets on the second day of their match with Warwickshire at New Road. Gareth Batty finished unbeaten on 60 but late blasts from Neil Carter, who ended up with six for 100, and Chris Woakes (four for 80) curtailed the innings on 339.
However, in reply the visitors were bowled out for just 251, Jonathan Trott making an unbeaten 88 and Chris Whelan claiming four for 66.
Gloucestershire's decision to bat first against Middlesex at Lord's backfired as they were bowled out for 218. Derbyshire reached 82 for two when rain halted their second day at home to Glamorgan, whom they had bowled out for 348 earlier in the day.
