Only 18 overs were possible in three abbreviated sessions during the morning but Adam Shantry took his third wicket, that of Dan Birch, well taken low at cover by Alex Wharf off a loose drive. Greg Smith was caught at square leg off Jason Gillespie to leave Derbyshire needing another 98 runs with six wickets intact to avoid the possibility of following on.

Play began on time only because the groundstaff had started work at 5.30 a.m., under the glare of floodlights, on a drying out process following the heavy rain of the previous day. Nyan Doshi, 29, a slow left-arm bowler and not involved in the current match, has been released by the club at his own request after taking only eight championship wickets at a cost of 80.75 runs in seven games in his debut season.

Persistent rain ruled out play in the afternoon, an early tea being taken at 2.40 p.m. An inspection was planned for 4.15 p.m.

Wavell Hinds reached only his third championship half century in 13 championship innings for Derbyshire this season but shared a fifth wicket stand of 79 in 26 overs with Dan Redfern before attempting a pull and being caught off a top edge. Overall, 112 overs had been lost in the match so far, with the latest shortfall of 55 contributing to an almost inevitable draw. Redfern, 18, completed a career best 69 not out, with nine fours off 98 balls.
