Steve Harmison, the Durham seamer, took another wicket as Somerset collapsed to 198 for six at tea in their LV County Championship Division One match at Taunton.
The England paceman added the wicket of James Hildreth to that of Marcus Trescothick, while his brother Ben dismissed Ian Blackwell to leave the home side in trouble.
Somerset are currently second in the championship and a win could see them overtake Nottinghamshire, who have played one more game than the west country side.
A fine innings by wicketkeeper Nic Pothas put Hampshire in a commanding position on 332 for six at tea at the Brit Oval against Surrey.
Pothas (95 not out) was ably supported by Michael Lumb (72) and Liam Dawson (38) as the visitors sought maximum batting points.
A strong stand between Kadeer Ali and William Porterfield ensured Gloucestershire's good start in their Division Two match against Leicestershire at Grace Road continued.
Kadeer reached 61 not out at the interval with Porterfield unbeaten on 47, leaving the visitors on 113 without loss.
Essex's Ravi Bopara took three wickets to reduce Northamptonshire to 255 for six in a finely-balanced match at Wantage Road.
The England all-rounder removed Stephen Peters, Rob White and Nicky Boje while Graham Napier missed a hat-trick opportunity after claiming two wickets with successive deliveries.
Worcestershire's hopes of extending their lead at the top of Division Two were hit by rain at the Swalec Stadium where no play has been possible against Glamorgan.
