But an impressive reincarnation took place yesterday in Beaconsfield, as Michael Bevan and Min Patel joined a side captained by Sir Vivian Richards to announce the club’s rebirth, and some even loftier goals. The renaissance is the work of Neil Burns, the former Leicestershire wicketkeeper, who believes cricket must reach out to talent it may otherwise miss in state schools, inner cities and the Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities.
“I want more people to have the opportunity to become top class players,” Burns said, “but particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The LCCC will ultimately be about identifying and developing talent so that we can be a bridge into the system.” The LCCC’s list of priorities includes finding six young cricketers for three-year development schemes and overseas tours.
MCC — who sent a strong XI to Beaconsfield — are enthusiastic supporters, but fundraising is a priority. The W. G. Foundation has been set up, with membership costing £1,000.
“Just getting a chance to play is the main problem in London,” Arfan Akram, 20, said. Akram, who, as captain of Wanstead Cricket Club, is one of the lucky ones whose talent has not slipped through the net, batted with both Bevan and Richards, making 51 not out. “Batting with two world-class players is a dream come true,” he said.
Today’s youth may find it easier to identify with football stars or rappers than cricketers, so Richards — whose streetwise demeanor was a vital part of his game — is the perfect front man. He has signed as captain for two years and plans to be more than just a figurehead. “I know it’s all coaching badges now,” he said, “but I think 124 Test matches means you can pass on the necessary experience.”
