England collapsed to a humiliating 124-run defeat in their final warm-up match before the start of the one-day international series against India.
Kevin Pietersen's side were all out for 98 as they chased the 223 needed to be a Mumbai XI with the defeat coming three days before the opening one day international in Rajkot.
Facing a team made up mostly of club professionals, England never recovered from losing their first five batsmen inside the first 12 overs - with seamer Khsemal Waingankar, who has played only one first-class match in his career, claiming five wickets.
England restricted Mumbai to a modest total, after deciding to bowl first, with Samit Patel and Steve Harmison claiming two wickets each. It took a determined 65 from left-hander Sushant Marathe and a quickfire 37 off 35 balls, which included three sixes and a four, from Shaoib Shaikh to guide Mumbai even to that respectable total.
But having performing impressively against more modest opposition on Sunday, England's brittle batting was exposed against the new ball - and they failed to recover from their dismal start.
Pietersen shrugged off the impact of the defeat, insisting nothing should be read into England's display.
"I think the guys are all right, we just need to turn our heads on now and make sure we start on Friday," he said. "Today and what happened the other day doesn't really count in the grand scheme of things. What counts is the internationals
"This really doesn't matter, but it has taught us a few quick lessons."
Pietersen remains confident his side will improve when the stakes are higher.
"The opposition wasn't spectacular the other day and it was better today so we've just got to turn our games on and get our heads right. The boys had a long journey to India and we've settled in nicely now so it's just a case of getting our heads on.
"I'm not sure if we were fully focused but this is a really good lesson, I don't see this is a bad thing at all. It's just a case of learning from today and at the end of the tour no one really remembers what happened today or the other day, what counts is what happens on Friday."
Ian Bell had looked in good touch scoring 58 in Sunday's emphatic victory over the Mumbai Cricket Association in a 12-a-side match - but lasted just two overs today.
Facing Kshemal Waingankar, Bell hung his bat outside off-stump almost in practice at a cut shot - apparently believing the wide delivery would pass harmlessly to the wicketkeeper, but instead edging behind. Prior suffered his second successive failure of the tour in the next over when he was given lbw to seamer Rajesh Verma, from a delivery which kept low.
Waingankar claimed his second victim in his next over and claimed the key wicket of Pietersen, who advanced down the wicket trying to whip the ball through mid-wicket but was hit on the pad - and the umpire upheld the appeal.
Patel, promoted to No 5 to give him batting practice, was fortunate to survive another lbw appeal two balls later as he tried to rescue England in partnership with Paul Collingwood.
Their stand lasted only five overs, however, when Collingwood advanced to Verma and drove straight to mid-on to leave England in disarray.
Patel lasted a further three overs before also falling, this time edging Waingankar to second slip as England slipped towards the danger of a humiliating defeat.
England's attack had earlier been given a good workout in the field - with the Mumbai XI, a stronger line-up that Sunday's opposition, battling to a respectable total after losing opener Paul Valthaty in the third over.
Valthaty gave Lancashire seamer James Anderson an early success. But it was a further 24 overs before England claimed another breakthrough and ended an 81-run second-wicket partnership - Graeme Swann having opener Praful Waghele caught in the deep, attempting a slog sweep.
Patel also claimed two wickets to enhance his chances of selection in Rajkot. Steve Harmison grabbed two, including ending the threatening innings of Shoaib Shaikh - who hammered 37 off 35 balls, including three sixes and a four.
Sushant Maranthe top-scored with 65 before edging Harmison behind to Prior, who gave up the gloves for the final 13 overs to allow reserve wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose some match practice.
England had earlier decided to rest Owais Shah - while Stuart Broad was also left out after suffering a sore right knee and was replaced by Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright.
