England have fallen to one of their heaviest ever one-day defeats in the opening match of the one-day series against India this morning.
Kevin Pietersen's team slumped to 229 all out in reply to India’s record-breaking total of 387 for five in the first match of the seven-match series.
Chasing India’s stunning score, Yuvraj Singh hit a brilliant 138 off only 78 balls, England lost four wickets inside the first 11 overs of their reply before battling to reach 162 for seven after 30 overs.
Pietersen hit a battling 63 before being run out in a mix-up with Ravi Bopara, but otherwise England struggled to match the ferocity of India’s strokeplay at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground.
England narrowly escaped the ignominy of achieving their heaviest ever one-day international defeat batting second of 165 runs, which they suffered against West Indies in St Vincent 14 years ago and against Pakistan at Karachi in 2005.
Pietersen insisted it was the brilliance of the Indian performance, rather than England's mistakes, that led to such a one-sided contest.
"If you stand and watch an innings like Yuvraj played and Sehwag you have just got to take your hat off to the way they played," Pietersen said. "It's an amazing batting pitch. You just need to touch it and it goes for four... and a bit harder and it goes for six."
"We'll sit down and see where we made a few mistakes," he added. "But if a bloke [Yuvraj] plays like that you're behind the game straight away.
"It was a bit of a licence to go out and enjoy yourself. You've got to say well done, they played super cricket today.
"You've got to try to make sure you go over what you've done not so well and regroup. There's six games left in the series and we want to bring some real good cricket to Indore."
England slumped to 38-4 after their decision to bowl first backfired spectacularly against India's free-scoring batsmen. Yuvraj compiled his stunning score despite injuring his back and having to use a runner for most of his innings.

I think that Kevin Pieterson's instructions to the team to celebrate victory with restraint were a tad presumptious
