A very difficult day for England, what were your thoughts?
It's going to be very tough for England. The pitch is relatively flat and the
Indian batsmen have looked relatively comfortable out there. I don't
actually think that England bowled that badly out there today and at times
they were extremely unlucky.
I thought Graeme Swann bowled a lovely spell in the afternoon when he could
have Gambhir out three times, with Paul Collingwood dropping an extremely
difficult chance at slip.
Another thing that has been encouraging from England's point of view has been
Kevin Pietersen's captaincy. He has been much more inventive tactically than
he was in Madras and hasn't been afraid to mix things up with his bowling
attack.
I think at one stage he went with a seven/two field to Gambhir and so at least
he looked as though he had a plan for each batsman.
So was it just a case of the Indian batsmen being too good?
Unfortunately, it was just one of those days for England. They didn't really do anything wrong, sure they had a couple of chances but they were extremely difficult and the India batsmen kept their composure, got themselves settled and played extremely well.
But this is a pitch that is going to favour the batting side, so the prospect of England coming away with a favourable result is fading fast.
Were you surprised by the decision to recall Stuart Broad in favour of Steve Harmison?
It was certainly an interesting choice. The decision to leave Harmison out of the side was obviously based on his performance or lack of it in Madras. It was interesting to hear Pietersen say at the toss that they had gone for Broad because he is a very positive bowler and that comes across in his body language. Almost by inference Pietersen was suggesting that Harmison did not show those qualities in Madras and that England weren't happy with his performance.
But Broad bowled well today getting the early wicket and looked bright throughout. Although by leaving Harmison out of the attack England just lacked that extra bite that he offers. That's the problem England have when he's not in the attack. But it seems they can't live with Harmison and can't live without him.
What do England have to do differently tomorrow?
Well they will have a new ball available tomorrow morning and if they can get an early wicket then they could pick up a couple more and hopefully get some momentum going.
But given the conditions and the lack of spin out there it looks as though it could be a really long hard slog for England tomorrow, especially given the form of the Indian batsman. Psychologically this is going to be an uphill battle.
