When Kevin Pietersen was unveiled as the new England captain you said you had a horrible feeling it would all end in tears - why was that?
I felt Pietersen's appointment was a gamble for two reasons. Firstly, because he was the best player in the team and I was concerned about how it would affect his form as it has done with so many others in the past. As it turned out, his form has not suffered at all as he has continued to score runs. But I also wondered how he would get on with the England management as he had a history of clashing with hierarchy and he came into the job not seeing eye to eye with Peter Moores. Until this week he'd handled the job better than I expected. He made a good start in the final Test against South Africa and I thought he did well in India.
It has been reported that Moores has also resigned as well - was this inevitable?
Once Pietersen's opinion became public and there were noises that other players within the camp were not happy, it was hard to see how Moores could continue with any confidence of the team. "Inevitable" is a strong word to use but it was always going to be difficult for a man to take the job when he had no reputation of having played the game at Test level. The real difficulty he faced was when this dispute became public.
Who has come out worst from this: Pietersen, Moores or the ECB?
Nobody has come out of this well. Moores has kept his counsel and remained dignified throughout the entire episode, but the ECB's judgment in appointing him as quickly as they did [following Duncan Fletcher's departure in 2007] will be questioned. So will Pietersen's judgment in how he has dealt with his situation with Moores.
Who should be the new England captain?
Andrew Strauss is the obvious candidate. He could have got the job before Andrew Flintoff was named [as captain] and he was in the frame before Pietersen got it. There is no other stand-out candidate that I can see, but I feel the problem is with the one-day team. There should be a split captaincy between the Test side and the one-day side.
Who should be coach?
Andy Flower is a strong candidate and Graham Ford has been mentioned this morning. I question whether there should actually be a head coach. There is already a batting coach, a bowling coach, one for fielding and one for tactics so perhaps what is needed is an overall manager to coordinate the roles. I'd like to see the importance of the head coach downgraded. The ECB will probably look for a stand-in to go on the tour of the Caribbean and make their decision on the permanent successor to Moores after that.
How much does this affect England's chances in this year's Ashes series?
If this was going to happen, it is better that it did now rather than a week before the Ashes begins. The big question mark hangs over Pietersen. If your best player has just resigned over a lack of support from the ECB and the players in his team, then how well can he reintegrate into the side? If Pietersen comes back and scores runs as he has been doing then this shouldn't have too much of an effect on the series.

ECB got what they deserve appointing Petersen. Straus was always the best choice. I feel sorry for Moore, but at least he has shown some dignity in this.
ECB surprise me how they praise Petersen Hughes needs to think about what he says and the affect on the rest of the english players
Simon Jarvis, Geelong , Australia
Praise in public. Criticise in private. It shows a lack maturity on Pietersen's part. Looks like the ECB has played its part in all of this. If there were problems, they should have know about this well before it blow up. Bring on the Ashes I say!!!!
Benny, Sydney, Australia
It beggars belief Mike. My village team is a better run outfit!
if Struass had been treated better in his first stint as captain we might not be in this mess. I think he is the right choice, has a good record as captain and seems like a decent bloke, lets hope we can finally move forward.
matt, leicester, england
He was no (Moore) an Englishman than my Aunt Fanny, what a disgrace for a Captain ,with that ridiculus hairstyle,as are the players sometimes in their pyjamas, bring back a good opening batsman, some one who can score runs, and,a few of our good bowlers ( we do have them) !
derek bevan, Huntingdon, ENGLAND
As a South African I shed tears for England....
Tears of joy.
KP's never shown any level of commitment or loyalty for any team, or country, he's ever played for. It was such a daft appointment in the first place, it's like the Proteas making Herschelle Gibbs captain.
Stupidity....
EzeeT, Durban, South Africa
I agree with Mike Atherton's sentiments. Right from the start Pieterson smacked of over confindence with a hint of arrogance - a clash with any other personality of authority was approaching like a steamtrain. Incredible the ECB could not see this from the start. However, he is a top class player.
Jonathan Witter, Paris, France
The Pieterson/Moores saga is typical of the current and dreadful state in which English cricket finds itself. The Stanford debacle and the stampede for Twenty/20 greed on top of today's news must bring into question the competence of those at ECB running the game.
Adrian Walmsley, Chester,
There is no reason why the test captain should not be different from the ODI captain. Test cricket is real cricket, demanding a wholly different set of skills. Any professional cricketer with half a brain could captain ODIs or twenty/20.
Roy, Hong Kong,
Pietersen is a batting talent but very immature and this has often shown on the pitch. Everyone is replaceable so let us allow KP to stay at home to reflect on his future and take some new talent to the West Indies in preparation for life without KP well ahead of the more important, than KP,
H Smith, Formby, UK
Ian Botham would be the perfect coaching manager to strike fear into the hearts of the Aussies. He is wasted as a so-so commentator at the moment.
Nick Kay, Shrewsbury, UK
I agree with what you say , Mike , but not with your assertion that the test captain be different from the 1 day skipper. Why ? OK , the tactics are obviously different but a good captain should be capable of adapting to both forms of the game . It also provides continuity within the squad .
Peter, eastbourne,
The news isn't really surprising-KP's is very immature, with a big ego,had very little captaincy/man management experience and too readily talked to the gutter press.
The Board couldn't tolerate his ultimatums such as "sack Moores or I resign". He now is free to make millions in India.
Ian Nicholson, Newcastle, England
Pietersen has burned his boats by taking this immature and irresponsible action. If he had difficulties then he should have communicated through the appropriate quarters and kept out of the limelight during the interim.
