Geoff Miller has defended the actions of the ECB in the wake of the row that led to the departures of Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores.
The governing body has been criticised for the way that it handled the dispute that led to Pietersen, the England captain, to resign and Moores, the head coach, to be sacked.
But Miller, the national selector, insists that the ECB reacted correctly to the breakdown in relations between its employees. “The last 48 hours has been very interesting and it hasn’t been ideal for English cricket,” Miller admitted on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Hugh Morris has put an awful lot of work in in the past few days behind the scenes. It has been a non-stop procedure, but the ECB have not created the problems in the dressing-room and they have had to react accordingly.”
Miller said that he was unaware of there being “deep-rooted problems” within the England camp, adding: “I always look to create harmony in the dressing-room.”
Andrew Strauss has been handed the role of Test captain but it remains unclear whether he will also lead the one-day side, for whom he has not featured for more than a year. Miller said that he would hold talks with Strauss about the one-day captaincy, but admitted that there was no stand-out candidate. “He \ has not played for a long time but that’s not to say he’s not capable of playing one-day cricket for England,” he said.
Miller was instrumental in naming Pietersen as captain for both forms of the game last summer and has no regrets over the decision. “When we appointed Kevin we thought it was the right way forward and he will be an important part of the future for England,” he said. “We thought we were going in the right direction. He had his own viewpoints but just didn’t gel in the dressing-room with the coach.”
Despite the furore that has surrounded the team and rumours that Pietersen’s approach to the captaincy had split the dressing-room, Miller remained optimistic. “It’s up to the players to rally round now,” he said. “Sometimes when something like this happens, it makes the side stronger. I’m sure he will get them back to the form they are capable of ahead of the Ashes.”
