Atherton: changes will be made | Debate: who's to blame for England debacle? | Bell and Panesar should be dropped | David Gower: Gayle leads from the front | 51? Fifty-blooming-one? | England all out for 51 | England sink to their knees | What the papers say
ENGLAND were bowled out for their third-lowest total in Test history last night, subsiding to a humiliating innings and 23-run defeat in the first Test against West Indies. In their first match since losing Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores as captain and coach last month, England were dismissed for 51 - their lowest total since scoring 46 in Trinidad in 1994 - shortly before tea on the fourth day at Kingston.
Sabina Park, where Steve Harmison routed West Indies for 47 in 2004, became the scene of a brutal payback as England’s top order collapsed to a wonderful spell of inventive fast bowling either side of lunch from local boy Jerome Taylor, who snatched career-best figures of five for 11 and the man-of-the-match award. The result leaves the new regime of captain Andrew Strauss under huge strain. This was a series that most observers expected his side to win comfortably. Instead, with the Ashes less than six months away, he must reappraise most of his starting lineup. Only Andrew Flintoff, Stuart Broad, Matt Prior and, arguably, Kevin Pietersen emerged with any credit from this match.
The captain himself scored only 16 runs in two innings.
At 23 for seven, England were still three short of the world Test record low of 26, set by New Zealand, and 22 away from their own lowest Test total made at Sydney in 1887. Andrew Flintoff then led a minor rally, putting on 24 with Ryan Sidebottom, but the outcome was not in doubt. The last three wickets fell in as many overs, Sulie-man Benn finishing with four for 31. “We were entirely outplayed,” said Strauss, in his first match as official England captain. “We played poorly today and paid the price. Taylor bowled straight and fast and put us under pressure but to win these matches you need to absorb that kind of pressure. We must take it on the chin.”
Taylor bowled well but England’s batsmen were culpable. Alastair Cook and Ian Bell, retaining his place despite a long run of failures, squandered their wickets, but the pivotal moment was Taylor bowling Kevin Pietersen with a superb swinging yorker that took off stump. The ground erupted in delight. The second Test starts in Antigua on Friday and England will remind themselves that after Trinidad 1994 they won the next Test in Barbados.
