He has one year to run on his Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with Chennai Super Kings, worth almost £1 million for a six-week season. He will be able to earn the full amount in the six-week tournament next year.

He has held talks with Queensland about a short-term contract for Australia’s annual Big Bash competition and will seek to renegotiate his English domestic deal with Lancashire, which expires next year.

John Taylor, chairman of Sports Impact marketing consultancy, said: “He should be able to earn even more without Test cricket. He could have another three or four years of playing in the IPL now, which he wouldn’t have had if he’d kept playing Tests.”
