Andrew Flintoff led England off the field after helping his side to wrap up the second npower Test at Lord's 15 minutes before lunch. Bowling flat out in a ten-over spell, he claimed the third five-wicket haul of his Test career - and the first since the 2005 Ashes - as England beat Australia at Lord's for the first time since 1934.
Australia began the day still 209 short of what would have been a record first-innings chase of 522 to win, but the loss of Brad Haddin to Flintoff's fourth ball in the second over of the day, ending a stand of 185 with Michael Clarke, effectively removed any prospect of a turnaround. Mitchell Johnson made 63 at No 8, but Flintoff and Graeme Swann combined to earn England a 115-run win.
Flintoff did not look like a man struggling against a career-threatening knee injury when he struck Clarke with a ball timed at 92.9mph, but it was Swann who ended the brilliant innings of the Australia vice-captain. Clarke was fooled by the flight of Swann's second ball, came forward and effectively yorked himself for 136, playing inside a ball that dipped.
Johnson drove forcefully and slog-swept Swann, but Flintoff knocked out Nathan Hauritz's off stump and bowled Peter Siddle to have Australia nine down before Johnson swung once too often across Swann's off-spin and lost his middle stump. So, eight days after surviving by the skin of their teeth at Cardiff, England are 1-0 up in the five-match series with the third Test at Edgbaston starting a week on Thursday
Flintoff returned figures of five for 91, which began with the wickets of Simon Katich and Phillip Hughes, the Australia opening batsmen, yesterday. It was his bowling analysis at Lord's.
Mike Atherton stressed the importance of an early wicket for England - and that is exactly what Flintoff delivered. After a hostile opening over from James Anderson, in which he peppered Clarke and had several good appeals for leg-before, Flintoff struck with his fourth ball, turning Brad Haddin inside out and forcing an edge to Paul Collingwood at slip for 80. It ended a record sixth-wicket partnership for Australia at Lord's of 185.
Swann then got the scalp England needed most. Clarke stood his ground in dismay for seconds after his stumps had been rattled, then trudged off knowing that the match had probably gone.
